I’m a running hack as well as a writing hack. I spend a few months running and then skip a week and then a month and then (sometimes) a year before I decide to start running again. When I start running again, I spend a few days plodding around the streets or on a treadmill just going through the motions. And then I pick a race and sign up for it.
There is just something about spending that money.
I start logging my runs in spreadsheets. I start buying new shoes. I start increasing the miles. I’m doing it right now in fact. I have a race that I signed up for at the end of July. I signed up a couple weeks ago and have now run 13 of the last 14 days with no end in sight.
The topic of paying for things as a way to forcing yourself to stay committed to them came up recently on a website I frequent. One of the commenters mentioned that she thought she would write more regularly if she were paying a membership type of fee for it.
I half jokingly mentioned that she could send the money to me, I would email her reminders every day to get writing and pester her once in a while to see how she was doing.
She said how much and then after a couple of emails back and forth signed up.
Then someone else who read the exchange contacted me to see if I would do the same thing for her and she just signed up, too.
If you are interested, this is what I am offering. Each day, you will receive an email with a message that is either an inspiring quote (often slightly tweaked to make them writing relevant) or writing prompt or something like that and then a reminder to get writing. In exchange, you pay as a way to put your money where your mouth is and get some good ol’ wallet inspiration to sit down and write..
The first person signed up for a year. The second is going month by month for now.
